Eligible applicants will be full-time researchers. PhD students cannot apply as a sole investigator and must include an established senior researcher as a Chief Investigator in the application.

In any one year, an applicant may apply as Chief Investigator A on up to three GIA applications. However, CIAs may only be awarded one new GIA per year, and are limited to holding a maximum of 2 Grants-in-Aid.

If also applying for funding from NHMRC Project Grants, all NHMRC eligibility criteria for NHMRC Project Grants must be met.

When applying for both a NHMRC Project Grant and a Heart Foundation GIA, it is permissible to have a different CIA on each grant, provided that NHMRC and Heart Foundation eligibility criteria are met for each CIA on each application.
