Scheme description

Career Development Fellowships are awarded to outstanding early to mid-career health and medical researchers 2-12 years since the award of a PhD. Career Development Fellowships are tenable for 4 years and are awarded in six categories: R.D. Wright Biomedical, Clinical, Population Health, Industry, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Part-Time Employment Fellowships.

Eligibility

CDFs are offered at two funding levels: 
  • CDF Level 1: applicants will normally have at least 2 years and must have less than 7 years from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed (as at 31 March of the application year).
  • CDF Level 2: applicants will normally have at least 7 years and must have less than 12 years from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed (as at 31 March of the application year).

Note: Applicants who have been appointed to a Professorial position (including Adjunct, Clinical, Conjoint, etc. positions) by their institution at time of application are not eligible to apply for either Level of CDF;

Applicants who have been appointed to an Associate Professorial position by their institution at the time of application are not eligible to apply for a CDF Level 1. 

Applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen at the time of award acceptance. Applicants who do not hold a PhD but can demonstrate an equivalent research qualification (e.g. a professional doctorate) may also be eligible to apply.

**Applicants with less than seven years from the date of the letter advising that their PhD thesis was passed are eligible to apply at either CDF Level 1 or CDF level 2, but not both.
