NHMRC Early Career Fellowships

Advice and Instructions to Applicants

Eligibility Early Career Fellowships are open to applicants who hold a doctorate in a health-related field of research, or will submit their thesis by 31 December in the year of the application. At 30 June in the year of the application, applicants must have held their PhD for no more than 2 years. Exceptions may apply for applicants with appropriate clinical qualifications.

Early Career Fellowships are non-renewable. The following categories are available:

Full-time Australian Based Fellowships - for research training that is based entirely in Australia
  • Peter Doherty Biomedical Fellowship
  • Clinical Research Fellowship
  • Public Health Fellowship
  • Primary Health Care Fellowship
  • Fellowship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research
Full-time Overseas Based Fellowships - for research training where the initial 2 years is undertaken at an overseas institution, followed by 2 years in Australia
  • CJ Martin Biomedical Fellowships
  • Neil Hamilton Fairley Clinical Fellowship
  • Sidney Sax Public Health Fellowship
  • INSERM Exchange Fellowship
  • Fellowship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research
Part-time Australian Based Fellowships
  • Health Professional Research Fellowship
  • Australian Research Fellowship Part-time
Australia-China Exchange Fellowships
  • Austalian applicants - for Australian researchers to undertake research training for 2 years at a Chinese institution, followed by 2 years in Australia.
  • Chinese applicants - for Chinese researchers to undertake research training for 2 years at an Australian institution before returning to China.
Application process Applicants should read the application documentation below prior to commencing their ECF application.
  1. Log in to RGMS and complete all sections of your Profile and CV. New users to RGMS should submit a 'New User Request'.
  2. Commence a new application. Choose 'Early Career Fellowship' from the 'Initiative' drop-down menu.
  3. A complete ECF application must consist of the following:
    • Relevant information from RGMS Profile and CV
    • Completion of Parts A and B of the application
    • Proposed Research PDF (maximum 5 pages including references)
    • Academic Transcript PDF
    • Evidence of the date your PhD was passed
    • All referee reports uploaded to the application
  4. When the application is ready for Research Office administrative review and feedback, upload all PDF documents and generate new snapshot reports. Notify the Research Office via email, quoting the application ID number.
Do not certify until you have received feedback and are advised to do so by the Research Office.
Referee reports Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all referee reports are uploaded to their RGMS application, or submitted directly to NHMRC, by 19 April 2012.

Applicants cannot certify until all referee reports appear in B-R: Referee.

Referees with RGMS profiles should obtain the appropriate forms from the RGMS Library and upload their completed reports directly into RGMS.

Referees without RGMS profiles should obtain the appropriate forms from the NHMRC website and submit their completed reports to ecfellowships@nhmrc.gov.au.
